Why car insurance costs so much more in some states

  • No-fault rules: states like Florida, Michigan, New York and New Jersey require personal injury protection (PIP), which adds cost.
  • Traffic and city density: more cars mean more crashes and more claims.
  • Lawsuits and medical costs: states with high claim payouts have higher prices.
  • Weather: hail, hurricanes and flooding raise comprehensive costs in states such as Texas, Florida, Louisiana and Colorado.
  • Uninsured drivers: where many drivers skip insurance, everyone else pays more for uninsured motorist cover.
  • State rules on pricing: California, Hawaii, Massachusetts and Michigan do not allow credit-based pricing.

How to use the state averages

Each state average is for a driver aged 20 to 70 with a clean record and a $500 deductible. If you are under 25, have a ticket or accident, or live in a big city, expect to pay more than your state average. If you are a careful driver over 30 in a small town, you may pay less.

Frequently asked questions

New Hampshire, at about $85 a month for full coverage.

Which state has the most expensive car insurance?

Maryland, at about $302 a month, followed by Rhode Island and Delaware.

About our numbers

Prices on this page are estimates for U.S. drivers, built from 2025–2026 published rate studies (including Insurify, CarInsurance.com, The Zebra and state insurance department rules) and our own pricing model. Percentages for age, tickets, accidents, DUI, credit and vehicle type are our model estimates, not quotes. Your insurer, ZIP code and history will change your price.
