How our calculator works

  1. We start with the average monthly price in your state for liability-only and for full coverage.
  2. We adjust for driver age, driving record, miles driven, credit tier (except in states that ban credit-based pricing), vehicle type, model year and deductible.
  3. We show a range of 15% above and below the result, because insurers weigh each factor differently.
FactorHow we adjust (estimate)
Driver age 16–19About 2.6x the price for ages 35–54
Driver age 20–24About 1.6x
1 speeding ticketAbout +22%
1 at-fault accidentAbout +45%
DUIAbout +85%
Poor creditAbout +60% (where allowed)
Miles under 7,500 / over 15,000About −8% / +8%
$1,000 deductible vs. $500About −12% on collision and comprehensive

These adjustments are our estimates, set to match the range of increases reported in public rate studies. They are not any insurer’s actual rating plan.

Worked example: how one estimate is calculated

Driver: 22 years old in Texas, one speeding ticket, sedan four years old, 7,500–15,000 miles a year, $500 deductible, credit skipped, full coverage.

  1. Texas averages: $204 a month full coverage, $110 liability only.
  2. Liability part: $110. Collision and comprehensive part: $204 − $110 = $94 (sedan, 4-year-old car and $500 deductible all use a factor of 1.0).
  3. Base: $110 + $94 = $204.
  4. Driver factors: age 20–24 (×1.6) × one ticket (×1.22) × normal miles (×1.0) × credit skipped (×1.0) = ×1.952.
  5. Estimate: $204 × 1.952 = about $398 a month ($4,776 a year).
  6. Range shown: about $338 to $458 a month (±15%).

What our numbers cannot do

  • They are not quotes. Only a licensed insurer can give you a price you can buy.
  • They do not know your ZIP code, claims history, coverage lapses or exact vehicle.
  • Rates change often. We review our data at least twice a year.
